i know. i promised a couple of photos of some things in my earlier posts... there was snow! what could i do?

alas. here i am! tho, you will only be seeing one of the promises... as i'd like to work on the other promise for later next week.

here is a picture of the lovely labor-of-love chalkbag for hubby that i WOVE for him last year around this time. backbreaking work b/c i was sitting all wrong and really making my lines way too tight in places. i'm sure this is a common beginner-weaver mistake. :P but a year later - it is still holding up and being put to good, loving use:

it is snowing now. here. finally. it is so lovely. had an inkling to post a quick tutorial on felting stones. i love stones. i love them mossy. i love them plain. i love them crocheted. i love them felted. but the snow has me all giddy about felting right now. so.

felting stones, my friend, is easy enough for a 3 yo to make... so it's easy enough for you!

materials you'll need:

wool roving (local craft shop should have some, or if you can wait a bit - i order mine online from here: YARN.com

bowl of very warm water.

liquid dish or hand soap.

towel.

smooth stone.

now it's fairly simple - especially if you've felted before.

take your stone. and dip it into the warm water. then take a small length of roving and wrap it tightly around the stone. then dip the whole wee package into the water and squirt a drop of soap onto your stone. then gently drop the stone back and forth into each hand. like a hot potato. after a while it will start to feel a bit more solid again - then you can start to roll it between your palms like your warming your hands up. and then. voila! it is done. rinse it and press it into a towel and let it dry. then you can leave it as is or even add some lovely stitching to it. easy! enjoy!!

in the midst of all this very early 'spring cleaning' that i've pushed myself into - i've still managed to make room for comforts and creativity.

hubby managed to make some yummy bread over the weekend... it is almost gone and filled our bellies with yummy goodness.

i love his designs.

and i've been bitten by the weaving bug again. it hit me last winter around this time when i finally purchased a vintage 1975 Erica Rigid Heddle Loom on Ebay. Made one thing - a hemp rock climbing chalkbag for the honey for valentine's day. i'll upload a picture of it next post. but. it was such a backbreaking ordeal - as i'd never really knew for sure how to set it all up with ease - and had to follow the 1975 directions included with the loom since nothing else was available online that i could see. and it took me forever to make! but this winter! as i was reading one of my new favorite blogs: LaTouchables - she mentioned purchasing a scarf from this amazing weaver: Barefootweaver. and inspiration hit and the loom had to come down off the shelf and be set up!

but this time - i found a fantastic link on warping a rigid heddle loom online!

and got my game on!

isn't it just a pretty sight. all the thin fibers interlacing together. threads - some bumpy. some smooth. all creating an incredible piece of some kind of wonderful cloth. :) soothes my winterblahs.

along with listening to this amazing music on the victrola.

and hubby's early valentine's present was found via MyMidCentury - i know - it's still january. but this was my thinking when i had to talk myself into buying this:

a small diary to go along with the 1922 Victrola that was the Christmas gift. owned and written by a farmer in Arizona. well - it came in the mail and i couldn't keep it from him till February! i had to give it to the man, as he was standing right there when i opened it! this is what we turned to:

an entry of the farmer's sweet dog drowning in Salt River on June 11 which was just terrible - but do you see it?! the dog's name?!: Gypsie.

do i need to say anymore?!

anyways... after the initial shock of seeing the name 'gypsie' entered into the book... we returned to our regular bread-eating and last night i settled back into my 2012 technology gift from hubby which was Amazon's KindleFire - the kids use it more than me! haha... but i have to say - i have found a fun little App - called DrawingPad - which is complete fun to just vegg out on if you're tired of reading or surfing or creating with more than one finger.

i call this Scribbles1. :)

and wait till you see the cover i made for the K.Fire. it is awesome! i promise. i'd like to make a few and tidy them into my etsy shop this week sometime. that is - if i can keep rolling through my spring cleaning and all... smooch!

ps. i had emailed the delightful CLOTHPAPERSCISSORS gang and heard that sometime in 2012 digital items will be available for the Kindle Fire... i can't wait! :)

and i've been bitten by the spring cleaning bug in January. gorgeous weather. a purdy bouquet on the table.

but it started in the 'toy closet' which needed some major clean-out, as you can imagine with 4 little people and their toys. as i started this - i decided to rearrange the large storage boxes in my bathroom which were mostly empty, then i rearranged furniture in a now unused small room - which made room for more storage space and rearranged stuff to go into there and today my bedroom was calling me - alas... i had to tackle it - as you really need a soothing place to sleep - not topsy-turvy next to your dreams. now let me point out that the toy closet is still not done - half-way but not whole-way. the hallway still has a few things standing by, ready to be moved around. but my side of the bedroom is getting cleared up! but watch out - lots of stuff is going back down to my studio - which will need a little TLC after all this crazy upheaval i've thrown the house into! hubby always gets excited when i'm in the mood to clean and destash. :P

rather than freak you out with the massive shifting of stuff around - here's a picture of some of the books that sleep next to my head - i like to study via osmosis. *wink*wink*

hope a little spring is peeking into view for you wherever you are. :) even if a blizzard is right around the corner. every little bit helps.

like turning a page from the end of one chapter and starting into the next. continuing down a journey. an ending. a beginning.

the flutter of pages, of seasons seem to go by so quickly these days. or perhaps it is the busyness that rushes me along and keeps my eyes from stopping,

from looking and drinking in
bits of glory... then the glimpse catches me

stops
me
still.

incredible beauties. soothing a wild tendency to run run run to the next project, event, place. whispering for me to listen. to look. to take it all in. to breathe. to hear my heartbeat.

even the broken pieces catch me and harness me into the need for re-creating.

do you feel it? a movement of sorts? a blending?
the autumn is slowly fading into winter here in the city.

We played with wet-felting and a bit of embroidery and embellishing

where have i been?!
well, let me tell you...

took a french bread-making class with hubby one evening and this is spiraling into a yummy hobby for us. in my fibery mind, all i could think of was felting wool when kneading the dough. similar process with the layers of fibers involved with dough and wool and folding certain ways. amazing.

then. my brave honey watched our 4 rascals and let me run away to kentucky's Red River Gorge for some awesome rock climbing with friends, one weekend.

and i've been working up a few new designs in my chalkbags. Rok-Owls! Aren't they cute?!

crowns for little royals.

want to make an easy crown for your little royal?

get some canvas fabric like this:

wrap and measure it around your child's head - leaving a 2 inch overlap.

find some purdy fabrics to layer onto it. then stitch them down.

turn the canvas over and draw out your points for the top of the crown and cut the triangles out. stitch over the edges. add some velcro to the overlap flap. stitch on a little trim - ribbon or bobbles...

crown your little royal!!

suppose your little royal wants a flower scepter!grab those triangle scraps and stitch them together. for the stem: grab another scrap piece of canvas and roll it up and stitch it closed - then wrap this with fabric and glue or stitch down.

roll the triangles around the top of the stem and glue it into place - then stitch the edges around the base to secure it.

voila! your little royal's flower sceptor!!

surprise your older little royals with a crown of their own - my kids (5-10yo) heads measured 21 inches. (don't forget the 2 inch velcro overlap)

now treat yourself with a royal hot fudge sundae before summer is 'officially' over!! you deserve it! :) xo

THEME OF THE WEEK: Thankful... draw, art it up, with images/words things that they're thankful for.

also - i'm a loosening up the week for my kiddos - it seems to work better to only work in the journal a couple of times during the actual week - sometimes even just one day. alas. do what works best for you and your schedule.

here are last week's photos: my older boys took WIND a little more silly as "bottom wind"... and giggled the whole way. and my 5yo decided to journal on her arms as well. :P

bugs and birds, oh my!! we started the week with some watercolor crayon washes to the pages and that was messy fun. forgot to take pix of those! then drawings happened in stages on top of fabric scraps glued to the pages, in a collage-y sort of fashion. the littler ones seem to be having more fun with it than the older ones. but we press onward!!

THEME FOR WEEK 3 - wings and things - that fly, float, flitter... i'm going to try to steer clear of birds and bugs, since they've already drawn those with last week's theme - but i don't aim to get into a tug'o war with them over it - if they want to draw a bird again, then so be it! :P my aim is to get them to explore and experience, then try to record this in arty form... so airplanes, kites, dandelion fluff...whatever blows in the breeze that day... art it out in the next signature! :)

my favorite days of last week's journal pages from my kiddos were the rainy days.

we went for watercolors on those days. and i had to jump in myself when we got those out. :P (see more on my flickr pool)

now - we are not spending a ton of time on these...as you can see. they are just quick little depictions of what is happening that day for the weekly topic. my boys do not seem to really want to dabble more than 5 minutes on the page - then they're off to playing again with other things... but it is something creative to work on habitually for the summer - in addition to their academic workbooks that they've been working on - HERE ....

newt week's theme....WEEK TWO : creepy crawlies, animals, birds, butterflies, etc...

we are starting a new booklet/signature. week 2:

this theme was requested by my 7yo. he said animals - and i was thinking - we live in the city and don't really see animals every day...so i had to expand it a little more to bugs and birds and butterflies. :P

can't wait to see what the littles draw up!!

my kids' summer journal project.

here's what i'm doing:

for my kiddos summer break - i've created a little project for us and made a little book for each of them. each book was made from 4 old book pages folded in half and bound together with a simple stitch. I have a weekly theme for them to record each day of this week - monday thru friday.

Week ONE: the weather. they are recording in picture form, or words, or collage, painting, etc... what the weather is like each day of this week. Any art medium will work. This is an art journal book project. Yesterday they used colored pencils. Today they worked with collaging. Tomorrow, we'll see what happens. :) Starting next week, we'll do it all over again - bind a new 4 page signature for each of them and i'll present the theme for all of us.

i'm happy to say these hands will be making an appearance at the Northfield Arts Guild WWW Exhibition in Northfield, MN from July 8 - August 6.

if you are able to see the exhibit in person, please do so - it will be quite fascinating - as fiber is quite tactile and the translation of WWW which is less tactile can cause several ponderings to occur.

had an incredible weekend retreating with some beautiful ladies. here's a peek of our exploring art journaling together...they had a blast..and the most frequest question was, "really? is it okay to do this?" just letting go and making a mess!! :P and we were having such a time that i forgot to take pix of the final journals!! they were amazing!

prepping for an upcoming women's retreat with some church gals... and will be hosting a wee workshop on art journaling...

wanted to whip up some crazy fun foam stamps for them to use. my first attempt - turned out pretty well. glued two foam pieces together - then went outside, where it was well ventilated and burned in the images with my heat tool.

looking forward to seeing what they create with these!

winter.spring - er, summer? cleaning? makeover!

after being propelled out of our tiny spring-winter-like weather - we tore into summer heat this week! but easing back into a spring-ness by the weekend... and our kitchen continues to get a little make-over...

last weekend - i played around with cake-pops --- learned about them via Alisa Burke -- also found a sweet tutorial on youtube.

but after messing with the sticks on my first run through - gave up...and just made little balls or bon-bons! they are best eaten right out of the freezer!! :)

but what does this have to do with a kitchen-makeover!?! nothing really, only that i love my walls a bit more now so i am in a more creative mood.

now for another project to throw into the mix. i've had these old frame-backs sitting in my studio (which is also getting a good spring cleaning) and decided to turn them into art-holders for my little master artists who always amaze me with their creations.

so it already has a hook on the back for hanging - there is no glass and there is no frame. alter some clothespins and glue them onto the board - i chose 2 for each "frame" so the larger works of art would hang easier.

i also painted a white border to dress the rustic frame up a bit. i am totally pleased with it! rustic, simple, wild, and easy!!

you could certainly alter the frames up any old way - i even thought about stringing ribbons through the holes on the edges... but decided on the clothespins in the end.

we painted our kitchen last week - it is a granite-boulder color and just perfect. i was craving a chalkboard wall for my kiddos to draw on too - and found this great link on how to make it the same paint color CHALKBOARD

in honor of national poetry month. i thought i'd take you on a tour of my wee 'storybox' art morsels. i have a good handful of them. they first had their debut in Cloth Paper Scissors Sept/Oct 2007 Magazine.

what i call 'storyboxes' - are essentially little stories/poems created in a small altered tin box. they are serendipitous and yet, created with great care and meaning.

i've had these boxed away for a while now and am happy to open them back up again and share their sweetness. they have aged like a fine wine.

stay tuned in a few days for the first of the storybox's unveiling.

after i had dyed this plain cotton into lush colors - i have been staring at it and dreaming up all sorts of ideas.

one of these ideas finally emerged today.

my own slip-on rustic poetry fiber art cuffs. simple. elegant. rustic. perfect.

i'm sooo pleased with my jar-dyed fabrics. i used a low-immersion water inside the jars and played around with the colors. (dylon dyes were used on plain ole muslin).

after adding my water-crayon-colored pieces, they held up pretty well. they were knocked around as i shook the jars of liquid - immersed - then after drying, i hand washed them with the fabrics and then dried them again. they have a dreamy faded look to them.

now i'm off to play with a friend and handstitch up some wonders with these.

i colored these with acrylic water soluble crayons... and heat-set them.

wondering now, what will happen when i stuff them into these jars of dyeing fabrics.

helping the month of march along with a bit of color therapy. :)

really. i know. i can't get enough of the rock climbing chalk bag. a couple gals i met at the climbing gym convinced me to host a wee party to make some bags together. so we did and it was fantastic fun. canvas. paints. wine. chocolate. tunes. stories. they created incredible artsy, yet functional chalk bags.

my whittling fingers sculpted a bit of painted fabric from THIS earlier post that was galaxy kissed and formed into a sea-song jewelry pod for holding morsels of sweet jewels and things precious. a pocket for the shelf and for the eyes to gaze upon.
